| The professional staff at Counselling Services deal with many personal issues and performance concerns that commonly arise in grad student life. These may include grad student balancing among academic demands along with part-time employment or practicum work and family or social life; motivational self-management to get through lengthy grad (e.g. dissertation) work; dependency on close collaboration with key faculty; critical stages in personal relationships or absence of social support in the area; and all of the other personal/emotional issues (depression, anxiety) that may threaten success or satisfaction in grad study at Laurier at some time or another. For busy grad students, the Counselling Services Web site (above) offers easy initial access to resources on effective performance and personal development. Often the next step may be the in-depth tailoring offered by one or more individual appointments (or joint appointments with a relationship partner) at Counselling=s private office setting in the Student Services Centre on Laurier=s Waterloo campus. Identifying yourself as a grad student in making that confidential appointment will insure that you are booked with a professional counsellor, not with a fellow grad (MSW) student that may be on placement during certain hours. Regular weekday office hours are extended until 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday from September through April (reduced to two evenings, May through August). Full-time and part-time grad students are eligible for these services, covered through your regular student fees. | |||||||||

| The purpose of the Writing Centre is to promote and enhance academic writing skills for all Laurier students. The program for graduate students consists of individual writing consultations, class presentations on specific writing issues and marking workshops for teaching assistants. Many graduate students come to the Writing Centre to get individual assistance with their academic papers, and they always see a writing professional, i.e., a staff member with a graduate degree and significant experience dealing with academic discourse. During a consultation, the writing professional will assess the major strengths and weaknesses of the paper and discuss revision strategies to enhance readability in terms of global concerns such as focus, analytical structure and argument. Sentence-level writing issues will also be discussed to help students communicate their thoughts clearly and precisely in agreement with the conventions of written English. The Writing Centre is located on the main floor of the Library, Room 213. Please see our website ( www.wlu.ca/writing ) for detailed information about our services and our hours of operation. | |||||||||
