WLUSA Arbitration Hearing Information

UNIONIZATION ARBITRATION 2008
The 2008-2009 GSA Executive has retained counsel to represent all graduate students who have part-time employment contracts (including TAs, RAs, IAs and lab instructors) in the upcoming Wilfrid Laurier University Staff Association (WLUSA) arbitration hearing. WLUSA has filed a grievance to have the definition of ‘casual worker’ in their collective bargaining agreement only include the unscheduled workforce. This would force graduate students to be included in the WLUSA bargaining unit retroactively and without their consent.
The GSA Executive does not tolerate the undemocratic methods used by WLUSA to expand their membership base. This treats graduate students not as equal partners in this union, but rather as unwitting members. In addition, WLUSA has not bargained on behalf of graduate students. Their contract negotiations with the university have not included measures to include or improve graduate student employment at WLU.
Should the WLUSA grievance be successful in its case, graduate students WILL NOT HAVE A VOTE as to whether or not they wish to become WLUSA members. As such, it will be our mandate to seek exit in the only way open to us – decertification of WLUSA.
The GSA Executive will be making frequent updates to our website to ensure that our membership is well informed of all developments in the weeks ahead.
